Congratulations to all cyclists who braved the Blue Ridge Mountain "Fog" on Sunday and conquered the summit of Grandfather in 2011. Due to the heavy fog, Parkway management decided that the Parkway was unsafe for cyclists and the Parkway segment was closed to cyclists after about 2 PM. The route was diverted to US Hwy 221. Just one of those weather things beyond our control that we learn to live with in the great North Carolina Mountains.
The climb and altitude change experienced during the Bridge To Bridge can bring drastic change in the view and weather. Most of the ride on sunday was in the fog. But the last two miles from Grandfather Mountain entrance to the top brought the bikers from the fog to glorious blue slies and warming sunshine. One biker was quoted as asking "Are we going into heaven?" Some think the top of Grandfather is very close to heaven.
